Vogue Africa?
It could be a homage for African women and a help for the development of continent’s fashion

Will there ever be a Vogue Africa?
Photographer and former Dessange makeup artist Mario Epanya says “yes” with a series of beautiful fictional Vogue Africa covers.
The Cameroon native, who grew up around style thanks to his fashion designer mother, says:
“I read my first Vogue in 1979 and have been buying it regularly ever since. I always felt that African creativity was not represented.”

He took his artistic skills to work, coiffing and making up several models for a project he hopes he can turn into a reality.
He says: “my inspiration for this project came from my life, and the colors, culture, and diversity that make Africa beautiful. I think African women are very strong and optimistic, and a Vogue Africa would be the ultimate homage to them. The Vogue edition could also help support the development of African fashion and sustain the continent’s various artistic endeavors.”

As soon as the multihued and vibrant covers hit the airwaves, the internet was literally abuzz with thousands of supporters and naysayers. Some say that Africa doesn’t need a Vogue and that the continent should focus more on building infrastructure and launching its own prestigious fashion magazine (different from Vogue).
In response, Mario says: “the time has come for Africans to come together and work for a better future. I think today’s women would like to re-appropriate their image. Beauty is diverse and we aspire to have more of a diversity of choice. I say, why not?”
